30 Days to Wisdom! - How it works: Part 1
Who wants to be wise? Surely I do! I was targeted early in life as having great intelligence, according to all the “objective” tests. However, I woefully underperformed in school. Quite frankly, I did in life as well. I wanted to do great things, but just seemed make bad decisions. Well into my 20s, I finally got a degree. However, my grades were poor, my resume was unimpressive, and I had developed a serious drinking problem. Enough was enough - I needed some serious wisdom, but where would I receive it? Was I too far behind in life to achieve my dreams? For that matter, what were my dreams, anyway?
The Greatest “Wise Man”
Anyone familiar with the story of Solomon? He was an early king of Israel who was reported in history to be the most wise man that ever lived. Foreign kings and important figures such as the wife of the Pharaoh of Egypt came to his court to hear his wisdom. Solomon amassed the greatest wealth of that day - perhaps you heard the legendary stories (or saw that really bad 80’s movie) about his mine.
How did Solomon gain this wisdom? Was he brilliant? Was he just a super guy? Neither. His father, David passed away and the kingdom was given to Solomon. Solomon was a young man, and quite unprepared for the task. He prayed to the Lord regarding this uncertainty. In that conversation, God said he would give young King Solomon whatever he wished.
What would you ask for? My mind reels at the possiblities. Solomon answered without hesitation. He said that he wanted wisdom so he could properly guide his people. Man, great answer!
God thought so too. the Lord was so impressed with this young man’s answer that he said he would give Solomon more wisdom than anyone ever had or will have. God also threw in a bonus. The Lord said that since he sought the wisdom of God before earthly riches, he would make Solomon wealthy beyond his dreams.
“30 days of Wisdom” - attaining wisdom in our lifetime
While we may not reach the level of wisdom in Solomon in our lifetime, wisdom is certainly not exclusive to the “days of old”. We can reach an outstanding level of wisdom, regardless of our testable intelligence. This is great news for us, but how may we get this wisdom?
We will begin a series next Monday, 2/13/06 titled “30 days to Wisdom.”
“Grr… I hate teasers! What am I supposed to do until then?”
We’ll warm up with a few posts this week that will prepare us for the series so we can get the most out of it.
- What is true wisdom?
- Where am I going to get wisdom if I haven’t “gotten it” yet?
- Will I really be wise in 30 days?
- Does this series cost anything or am I being pitched for a book at the end?
I’ll answer the last one right now - nope. We just want you to enjoy some nice pitch-free posts.
I need your help
My request though, is to please add any questions you would like answered about wisdom in the comment section.
