The Da Vinci Code - Why Christians Should Like it

I don’t think there is a worthwhile Christian church in the western world that hasn’t been discussing the Da Vinci Code in either the weekly message, publications, or in their small groups. I’ve heard about it through all those mediums, and it has been mentioned in nearly every Christian mass media such as radio or TV.

I’ll not beat the same drum about why we need to “stop the movie”. Let’s face it - Christian outcry is just feeding the flames of curiosity. What did Adam and Eve do when God said to not eat from the tree in the garden of Eden?

Instead, let’s talk about why this movie could be a good thing.

“What? Are you completely insane?”

Perhaps, but I still maintain that the Da Vinci Code, while still a tool of the Devil to “Steal, Kill, and Destroy” can be helpful to mankind. God already said that all things work together for good for those who love the Lord. How can a movie that seeks to discredit Jesus be used for the good of the Lord?

  • Separates the Believers from the Fakers - I don’t know about your country, but somewhere around 80% of Americans claim to be Christians. I don’t have to walk down the street very long until I realize that this number may include some “untrue” believers.

What is the difference? Its not up to me to judge. One thing I do know is that it will be extremely evident after this movie and much harder to fake our relationship to God through Christ.

  • People will be ready to hear the truth - Controversy gets people researching for the truth. I’ve listened to enough “former-athiests-turned-pastor” to know that once you start reading the Bible, it’s over - God wins… every time.
  • Gets me out of my own butt - “Did he just say that?” Yup - sorry folks, but I get too concerned with my own business, trying to get my work, family, and personal life in order. Heck, I get too busy doing “churchy” stuff sometimes to truly be about my Father’s business. That is, being a light to guide more souls towards the Lord.
  • It is easily disproven - I feel a bit like Simon Cowell here, but Satan, I’ve been deceived before and I probably will again, but this is not your best work. As long as the person who doesn’t believe in God is willing to listen the entire story is easily disproved without using the Bible (and many aren’t - just like me when I would be drunk at a party and someone would mention God - “Dude, you’re bumming me out…”) Pierre Plantard is the person who made up the whole notion of the Priory of Scion, and he admitted in a French court of law while being charged with some crime that he made up the entire thing.

Furthermore, letters in existence dating from the 1960s written by Pierre Plantard, Philippe de Cherisey and Gérard de Sède to each other confirm that the three were engaging in an out-and-out confidence trick, describing schemes on how to combat criticisms of their various allegations and how they would make-up new allegations to try and keep the whole thing going - these letters (totalling over 100) are in the possession of French researcher Jean-Luc Chaumeil, who has also retained the original envelopes (Wikipedia)

I challenge you folks - don’t use the Bible to disprove it. People will just say we’re using circular reasoning. I know the Bible is the direct word and inspiration of God, but the whole premise of the story is that the Bible is baloney, so let’s wake up here. Give them the modern facts surrounding the fabrication of the story.

There are currently 44 books at Amazon including written by even secular historians that debunk the Da Vinci Code. If we find someone struggling with the truth, it may be handy to have one of those books around.

Next tell them about your story of coming to Christ - a true story of God working in a person’s life. Keep it short - 3 to 5 minutes.

Then challenge them (in a nice way) to find the truth for themselves by reading the Bible. See if they want to come to your Bible Study or small group and stand by them as they ask questions.

If we are going to be lights, we need to be out front of them, leading them - not sitting in one place, or hiding in a closet.

I’m sure there’s more reasons why Christians should be “happy” about the Da Vinci Code, but this should be a good list to get started. Feel free to add more in the comments section.

  1. I like your logic! :-) Especially the first one. I’m tired of all the faithless squatters who call themselves Christians, but only confuse and discredit Christ by turning His truths upside down and inside out. By God’s grace and through the Spirit, persecution will make us stronger. But it will run them out!

  2. Very well written. That’s exactly what we are called to do, to use it as a tool to share Christ. To share the truth

  3. Follow up:

“The movie stinks” so sayeth the secular press. Most of the positive reviews were thinly disguised excitement that someone was going to take those evil Christians down a notch.

If the power of God had anything to do at all with us, then satan (little s) might just have a chance : )
