How Powerful are You?

Question #1 - What do you have control or power over in your life?

For those that don’t know me, I am a gargantuan man - 178 cm, and nearly 81,647 grams. (My apologies to you losers who are holding onto the English system of weights :|  ) When I started Celebrate Recovery, my immediate issues that I said I had control over were drinking and smoking.

Both were 100% bull. I had control over neither. What do I have control over today? My life is going great right now, but I’m not aware of anything where I have control. In any of those situations, my level of control or power is so tenuous, that the slightest ripple in life could take that all away from me.

Question #2 - What do you have NO control or power over?

I guess you know the answer to this given my last response - nothing. The funny part, is that this is a good thing. We’ll cover that later.

This is one of the hardest parts about going to Recovery, because the first step is to admit we are powerless. While we all lack power on some level, to admit we are completely powerless goes against everything we have been taught. It cuts against human nature entirely.

The paradox is though, that when I admit I am totally powerless, then I give room for God to step in. When that happens, I then have access to HIS power, which is infinitely more than any piddly effort I could have put forth. That is why God talks about the weak being made strong.

That is 100% true by personal experience, and I would tell you that face to face without blinking.

I’ve been slacking on moving forward with the addiction recovery aspect of this blog, but I’ve received a few comments recently from people having real problems - while I’m certainly not the guy to lead you fully to the promised land, I can share with you what I’ve received from Jesus and point you to the next person who is one step further than I.

So to begin this journey, I’m going to roll through some of the Celebrate Recovery curriculum. You can respond in the comment section below, and you can totally make up the information you put down below - or you can put your real info. Nobody will know either way.

The intent is to encourage you to check out CR, or other 12-step groups that will facilitate a relationship with Christ so you can be completely free of whatever bonds you have - and I’m not talking about pure chemical addictions. You could be hooked on worry, anger, selfishness, or any other of a million things you’ve been trying to shake for years. Sign up for the feed subscription or email over in the sidebar and let me know how I can help.

I’m very  excited that you’ve found this blog and hope you find something here that ministers to you. If you see someone’s comment where you can minister to them - jump in.

Be blessed.

  1. This is an awesome blog. I am a leader in our Celebrate Recovery ministry here at First Baptist Church of Lexington. I am currently leading a step study with men who have a sexual addiction. Your comments about your experience with the step study was refreshing. I am proud of you for your commitment to CR. God Bless You. Ken

  2. I enjoy your blog. You have a lot of good insight into areas that are important and often ignored in churches today. I shall continue reading with interest. God bless.
