Matt Chandler Sermons from the Village Church
Must give credit to my friend Bryan (w/ additional props to Nathan – see comments
), who turned me on to this great church near where I grew up in Texas. Matt Chandler is definitely gifted by the Lord in his ability to deliver the message of the gospel without having to water it down.
Hope this doesn’t scare anyone away from checking out their podcast or sermons but he usually tears us a new one (can’t say that in church, but you know what I mean) yet people come storming back for more. It’s like what all the hellfire and brimstone guys would be like if people actually became more fully-devoted followers of Christ as a result.
In the past people would have to uproot their family and move in order to benefit from these words the Lord passes down, but thanks to the internet, we can serve in our current local community and still get the teachings.
I usually listen to these messages multiple times while working on stuff around the house and get something new each time. Usually because I was reeling from a previous truth that I missed the next one.
Multimedia files of messages from Matt Chandler
(thanks to a few readers and bloggers on the web)
- the sermon archive on the Village Church website
- the village church podcast. on itunes
- check the comments below for a few cool video interviews & sermons
- view a message to the Dallas Theological Seminary
- another audio from Baylor
- Ran across a slew of great messages from Matt and other pastors at the Village Church. Most of these relate more to “professional ministry” but they certainly apply to anyone ministering the gospel… which would be all followers of Christ.
- parts one, two, three, and four of a video message from Foucus 2006
- short little video message called advice for preachers.
So who is Matt Chandler?
Here is what I’ve pieced together from a few articles around the web and his sermons.
- Been pastor of the Village Church where the membership has increased from 160 to 2500 in about 4 years despite him routinely telling people who do church “buffet style” to go away.
- Married and father of two. Seems to be in high demand from other ministries as a guest speaker.
- Has a sparsely-posted blog as part of a relationship with a ministry associated with Mars church in WA.
- Used to do college student ministry through Grace Bible Study in Abilene which was attended by 1,400 (or more) students weekly
- had “vibrant itinerant ministry for over ten years where he spoke to hundreds of thousands of people in America and abroad about the glory of God and beauty of Jesus” according to Bluefish
Enjoy the sermons & tack on anything else you know about Matt in the comments below which may give readers insight into his sermons. Just like knowing about the historical context of Biblical passages, knowing about a pastor’s background helps frame some of the information.

That’s so funny that you posted this today. I did a blog entry on The Village today too! Not to toot my own horn, but I actually told Bryan about Matt Chandler. But I can’t take the credit. I learned about this podcast from our friends that came down to Costa Rica for a short-term mission trip. They are members of The Village in Dallas. Anyway, it’s a great church, great teaching, and a great podcast. I agree with Matt 100%.
(I wish there was a preview button. All this code makes me nervous…)
My Google Alerts for Matt Chandler served up your blog to me.
Matt is a great preacher and I podcast him on the East Coast weekly.
Okay you Chandler Fans. Here are links to some great Chandler videos from the Resurgence Conference 2 months ago. If you like Chandler’s teaching, these are a must!

If you download nothing else, download Chandler’s 2006 Gravity message. It will leave you dazed with conviction. All Resurgence audio and video can also be downloaded as iTunes podcasts. Just search for “The Resurgence”. Audio & video are seperate pod/vod casts.

Bob,
Dynamite contribution to the conversation and it adds an entirely new element to “getting the message” for all those who learn with a little more visual element as well. Nice use of social media for Christ as well.
All I can say, people… is subscribe to the podcast. It’s free. Even if your internet connection is a public library (which mine was before I became Internet-goober), you are brand-new to the Kingdom, or just feel brand-new because you’ve been in the Christian rut of routine for your whole life, It will change your perspective of the gospel in a most-positive way.
btw Bob – I’d give a preview button but even mentioning html to all these heathens makes me more nervous… remember many on this blog have actually been behind bars. Either they or myself will hack somebody’s blog, drive that blog into a farmer’s field, or tip their blog over and surround it with traffic cones.
Man, I can’t wait to download these videos!!! I don’t even know what Chandler looks like! Thanks, Bob!!!
Nathan,
I hope you are blessed (and convicted) as much as I by Matt’s teaching. I use xbmc to stream videos fro my PC to my TV so videos of Chandler or Driscoll are a great resource for me. It allows me to watch a sermon instead of a sitcom.
By the way, Chandler has a bit of a little boy face. He is tall and thin and drinks bottled water incessantly during his messages.
Thanks again, Bob. I’m downloading now. I have heard about his water bottle. Can’t wait to see for myself.
For the record, I told Matt I learned about it from you, Son. You Tar Heels are silly. Thanks, Matt and Bob … Looking forward to the vids!
It is so amazing to see the spread of Matt’s popularity over the past 5 years. Before he was the pastor at the Village, he taught a “Bible study” called GRACE in Abilene, TX with several thousand college students in attendance every week (I attended for several years). It was a very difficult time for him in a lot of ways, since he was renounced as nearly heretical by several local pastors, simply for preaching Truth.
I am indebted to God for using Chandler to consistently refresh my weary soul for the past 7 years.
@MattB – found something close to what you were talking about from another student who attended Grace.
Hey do you have a link to the sermon you mention where Matt Chandler contrasts legalism and license? I can’t find it on his website? Thanks!!
Hey there, I am trying to track down the sermon of Matt’s on A contrast between Legalism and License that you refer to. I can’t find it on his website….Thanks!
Daryl,
The sermon on Legalism vs License was preached June 1st, 2008. It is Luke Part 19 and is titled “Childish vs Child Like”. Some of the stronger comparison between legalism & license takes place towards the second half of the sermon.
I had to go back and scan through 5 or 6 messages to find it again. I knew approximately when it was preached so I had a narrow band of messages to select from. I found it fairly quickly.
Daryl,
If you are still interested, I found a video of the sermon on License vs Legalism online. You can watch it here (or download it)

Enjoy,
Bob
Thank you bob for the links. I am wondering if all the audio sermons are available via video. I haven’t been able to find a lot of them but honestly haven’t been looking hard enough. Thanks.
Does anyone know where Matt went to school?
Where can you go and watch Matt teach and preach in person? Is there a list of his appearances? I would love to take my 22 year old son to listen to him as Matt’s teachings have changed his life and brought him out of the wild college lifestyle into walking God’s path in college. Please post if you have it! Thanks.
I’m not sure where Matt went to school, but he preaches at the Village Church’s main campus in Flower Mound, Texas, a Dallas suburb.
By the way, if you haven’t heard, Matt underwent brain surgery this week to remove a tumor. Not sure yet if it’s benign or malignant. Send some prayers his way!
I saw you on James Robinson tonight…it inspired me…I was at work listening…happened to turn in…my daughter in in ICU DelRay Beach Florida…I cannot be with her…she needs my insurance…I have to work and leave her…she is only 27…has seizures…and lost her will to live…as you are on your journey will you Please pray for Heidi…without a miracle she will die…I have no church and no christian friends…just happened to tune in…hope all is well with you…will you pray for Heidi..thanks
My wife and I are thinking of taking a trip to Dallas just to hear Matt in person. He has completely changed our lives. We both are very busy professionally speaking. So finding time for a daily bible study was hard. Now, we podcast his sermons and listen to then on our way to and home from work. Then we talk about the message at dinner. He is like listening to a comedy routine with a very moving, powerful and convicting spiritual and godly message. I am so thankful that a co-worker told me aboue him a few months ago. We are praying for his cancer and thank God for him everyday.
