Prayer Request for our Health Care System
First, I want to give God thanks for all of the blessings that each of us have in him, regardless of wherever we live. I also thank him for the wonderful advances in medicine, and the caring hearts of those who put forth tireless and often thankless effort to make people well again.
Unfortunately not everyone’s hearts in the health care industry are turned toward making people well. Money is a powerful and disruptive force in this industry. Think about it - unlimited demand, and a controlled supply. That’s a lot of temptation for any business person to not take advantage others in exchange for bigger profits.
My wife has worked in rehabilitation clinics, hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and home health and could tell you stories for days about shady-to-overtly-illegal decisions by the “higher-ups” in the health care industry to make an extra dollar. It makes me feel dirty just thinking about it, and I don’t see it every day.
Fortunately, there is a movie coming out that gives the rest of America a little taste of what is going on.
I’m not saying I agree with the concept of socialized health care, which I’m guessing Mr. Moore proposes in the film, but we need to be aware of the blind eye being turned to a huge area of graft and corruption from our government down to the private sector. I know I said I wasn’t going to get political… and I’m not. Just watch the movie, and please keep your nation’s health care system in your prayers.

Matt, I’m willing to give “Sicko” a shot, but I’m not exactly expecting a “fair and balanced” view of the U.S. healthcare system! While I agree that the system has serious flaws that need to be addressed — obviously, there are millions of people without healthcare, and that’s not good. But if you want to see what socialized healthcare looks like, come down to Costa Rica. It is much, much, much, much, much, much WORSE. The American system is far from perfect, but it’s far better than most. Just my two cents.
Hi Nathan,
I disagree with the concept of socialized health care as a whole and am not expecting a “fair and balanced” view. Even if Sicko is extremely biased, I think it’s very important that we take opportunities to see both sides with full knowledge that the side whom we disagree with will not present it “fairly” in our eyes… hence their position as being on one side and not the other.
I can’t find the verse right now, but I think Paul even said something about needing to see things from another’s point of view - not so we’ll agree, but so we understand why they believe what they do.
You do have a unique perspective on the US Healthcare system, and could cast a well-deserved shadow of doubt on the WHO healthcare rankings, which actually ranked Costa Rica ahead of the US. Perhaps some anti-US bias by those constructing the study?
Even if the US system is better than most, there is always room for improvement. We’re supposed to do the best we can with every gift. In nursing homes, there are people being hurt every day - not just from staff abuse (which is the most publicized), but because of unethical-to-illegal decisions made by management. Of course then there is the issue of gross financial abuse of taxpayer dollars.
I realize that this will keep happening but so long as there is sin in the world but shining a light on the problem makes those doing wrong think twice. It’s a bit ironic that the light has to come from a guy who may not be a Christian.
