The Prodigal Son (or Daughter)

Even as the Prodigal Son or Daughter, God is still watching us with love; waiting for our return
So, you lost your way. It happens to many of God’s children. From the standpoint of one who was lost for some time herself, I can promise you that coming home is easy. The Father is waiting with open arms and has been since you first left.

Remember, it was not God who leaves for awhile; it was us. His love for us can not be changed by any mistake we may have made while we were away. Nothing can separate us from God’s love. He loves us so much that he sent his son to die for us, just so we could have the opportunity to choose to spend our eternity with him in heaven.

Jesus illustrates this concept for us in the parable of the Prodigal Son, upon the arrival of the wayward son at his father’s house.

“Even while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him. He ran to him, threw his arms around him and kissed him.” (Luke 15:20)

Jesus had all of his prodigal sons and daughters on his heart the day he gave us that parable. He knew all of us before we were born, knew every mistake we would make, and every sin we would commit. He even knew we would walk away from his love for a season. With full knowledge of all our shortcomings he still loved us enough to die in our place. It is through this love we are saved and through this same amazing love we are welcomed home to a father’s embrace.

Talk to God; he is still listening and he will not make this difficult. After telling him that you are sorry (repent) and that you missed him, ask for his direction in your life. Recommit yourself to his leading and place God in control. He has a far better life for you in mind than the one you tried to find on your own. There will be some parts of your current life and thought pattern that he will lead you to change; a little… or a lot.

Do not worry, though! God will help us in ways we never could have imagined. We can not change these things on our own with our sinful bodies, but God has given us the holy spirit to live within us. His power – the same power that created the heavens and the majesties of this world is now in your life. Trust God, let go of the past and walk boldly towards God’s destiny for the rest of your life.
